Last week, my 17 year old daughter decided that she would protest a decision that my Boo and I made as a couple. Her method of protest, Silent Treatment.

Maybe I should back up and provide context.

Earlier this summer, John and I made the decision to take our relationship to the next step and have a baby together. An exciting and unexpected development. At 37, I really thought that there would be no more babies for me — even though I’d always thought I’d have more than one.

After we made the decision, we were very aware of our daughter and how she would respond. At the first opportunity, we worked it into conversation. To which she replied, “Have fun with that.”

Four more times we brought it up in the natural flow of conversation. And for the last three times she seemed shocked. “You never told me that.”

Then last Thursday, while we were eating dinner she asked, “Are you guys trying to get pregnant?”

We both replied, “yes” and boy were we shocked by her response.

“I’m going to my room to cry now.” As she pushed back from the table.
“I DO NOT SUPPORT THIS!”

These were last words we heard from her lips. Stoney expression and coldness summarize her demeanour as we tried to interact for the past four days.

To say we are at a loss is an understatement. We have always had open and transparent conversations about every difficult social or general topic and to have her revert to ‘Silent Treatment’ is out of character.

And now, the million dollar questions. How do you thaw the cold sholder?
